Allen Zweben

Dr. Allen Zweben has been an active researcher in the addiction field for more than 40 years. His contributions to the addictions field have involved developing, adapting, and testing assessment tools and behavioral intervention approaches for alcohol and drug-related problems. He played a key role in developing and testing motivational enhancement therapy (MET) an approach that has been widely utilized in mental health and substance use fields. Dr. Zweben has been a principal investigator in large scale, multi-site, collaborative, NIH-funded clinical trials, involving behavioral treatments and/or medications including Project MATCH and the COMBINE study, both of which are considered landmark studies in the alcoholism field, HEART-to- HEART, a study testing the efficacy of combining alcohol and HIV risk reduction interventions for women with AUD and the most recently  the ADVANCE Study, a study testing the efficacy of a medication, varenicline, originally indicated for treatment of nicotine dependence, for alcohol use disorder in combination with counseling.
