Bernard Chang

Dr. Chang is an emergency medicine physician with research interests in the evaluation and management of patients with substance and other mental disorders presenting to the Emergency Department, and psychological impacts of emergency care and emergency department environments on both patients and providers. Research projects have examined the impact of emergency department crowding on both patients’ experiences and clinicians’ performance, the impact of psychological stress associated with emergency department visits, and elevated risk of mortality after discharge from the emergency department among patients with mental disorders. Dr Chang is interested in developing interventions within an emergency department visit to more effectively intervene with patients with opioid use disorder and prevent the risk of overdose death. He has been selected to serve as Site Principal Investigator on a newly funded, multi-site trial within the NIDA Clinical Trials Network, examining initiation of buprenorphine among patients with opioid use disorder presenting to the emergency department.
