Nasir Hasnain Naqvi

Dr. Naqvi is a psychiatrist and cognitive neuroscientist focused on translational research on addiction. In 2007, he discovered that damage to the insula leads to a profound and abrupt disruption of addiction to cigarette smoking. Since then, he has been trying to understand the role of the insula and related neural systems in the maintenance and treatment of addictive disorders. His work has been funded by a K23 Mentored Career Development Award from NIAAA. He is a recipient of the Louis V. Gerstner, Jr., Award for translational research at CUIMC. He also serves as Multiple PI on an NIAAA- funded R01 evaluating how craving regulation systems versus cue reactivity are impacted by brief interventions in problem drinkers. In addition to his research, Dr. Naqvi’s subspecialty is addiction psychiatry, and his clinical interests are in the treatment of substance use disorders by combining behavioral and pharmacological approaches.
